COMMAND 14U REACHES CHAMPIONSHIP GAME OF BPA FOURTH OF JULY TOURNAMENT

The July 4-5 weekend saw H-90 send three teams into tournament action. At the BPA Fourth of July Classic in Ripon, the Command 14u made it to the championship game after compiling a 2-1 record including an 8-5 win over the Turlock Tribe 15u and a 4-2 victory against BMP 15u. However, in the title battle, the team made a number of mistakes and were defeated by the San Leandro Outlaws and finished 2nd. At the Stars and Stripes Wood Bat Tourney at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, a combined Clinch 16u/Show 15u squad went 1-1 in pool play to reach the championship round, but couldn't get to a tough Central Coast Baseball hurler and dropped their semi-final game. The Rival II 13u were inconsistent at the USSSA Fourth of July Tournament at the Sacramento Sports Complex going 1-3 to miss reaching championship play. All in all it was an up and down weekend for our three clubs, but our athletes got in some great baseball against some strong competition.

USA BASEBALL 16U CHAMPIONSHIPS AN EYE OPENER FOR H-90

Hard 90 just got back from competing for the first time in the USA Baseball 16u Championship-West Tournament in Arizona where they faced the best teams in the Western United States. Players in the event had the exclusive opportunity to be considered for the 2008 16u USA Baseball National Team. The tournament served as an eye-opening experience for our athletes as the team scratched its way to a 2-5 record. Our team ran into a buzz saw in in its first game, getting no-hit by a Placentia Mustangs' hurler who was subsequently chosen for the national team trials. Hard 90's bats awakened the next game against the Blue Wave from Southern California but a 9-run 3rd inning did the squad in as they lost 12-7. The next game saw our club use a seven-run third inning to carry them to a 10-3 victory over Mountain West (Colorado). In their fourth contest, the team fell to the Texas Sun Devils by a score of 13-3. The boys bounced back from that defeat to squeak out a 9-8 victory over Quakes Baseball (Southern California) but then let a four-run lead get away in losing to Utah Blue by a score of 8-6. In the final contest, Rijo Academy (Washington) scored two runs in the last inning to defeat our squad by a score of 5-3. Despite the heat and overall record, our players had a memorable experience and enhanced their baseball skills through going up against top-notch competition and playing in two great baseball facilities. Hard 90 is honored to have been chosen for this event and proud that were able to showcase our talented players in the most prestigious tournament in the United States! H-90 participants included: Kendall Schroeder, Riley Drongesen, Dan Child, Sean Sundberg, Braden Young, Jason Taasaas, Frank Duncan, Jonathan Siino, Zach Madrigal, Ryan Hackel, Brad Gerig, Isias Alcantar, Ryan Hall, Aaron Davis and Dustin Williams. Congratulations to our teammate Dan Child for earning a prestigious invitation to the 16u Baseball National Team Trials to be held in a few weeks. We are already looking forward to competing in the 2009 USA Baseball 16u Championships!

HARD WORK LEADS TO MAJOR LEAGUE SUCCESS!

Over this past winter, Milwaukee Brewers hurler Manny Parra could often be found at Arena Softball working with Hard 90 pitching instructor Guy DuBets preparing for the 2008 Major League Baseball season. He even came out and spoke with our older players a few months ago. Manny, who graduated from Casa Roble High and was drafted out of American River College in 2001 by the Brewers, has worked with Coach DuBets since the age of 14. Manny has now earned a spot in the Brewer's starting rotation this season. The club's faith in him has been rewarded as he is currently 7-2, winning five straight starts. According to Coach DuBets, Manny wasn't a star in local leagues or high school but, "always was a hard worker and always very coachable." Manny's perseverance and patience has paid off, as he has reached baseball's top level and seems destined to have a long career ahead of him!

H-90 TEAMS COMPETE WELL OVER JUNE 14-15 WEEKEND!

H-90 had three teams competing in tournaments this past weekend. At the highly competitive Perfect Game B.C.S. tournament in Moraga, our USA Baseball 15u-16u team played extremely well to win their pool with a perfect 4-0 record. Their performance vaulted them into the semifinal contest at St. Mary's College but the club could not advance, falling victim to tired arms and a strong NorCal team. At the USSSA 16u Pop's Honor Tournament in Ripon, a combined Show 15u/Clinch16u squad lost their two pool play games on Saturday to take them out of championship consideration, but bounced back with a convincing 11-2 victory in Sunday's consolation game. At the USSSA Tournament of Champions, our Rival 13u, playing up 14u AAA Division, did well with the older competition in pool play, winning all three of its games by a combined score of 22-4. Unfortunately, in the championship game the team had a number of defensive lapses and fell to a tough Puma Baseball club to earn the second place trophy. All in all it was a great weekend for our athletes with beautiful weather throughout and lots of good, competitive baseball.

Hailing from Roseville, Nick just finished up a successful sophomore baseball season at Oakmont High where he was the starting catcher. Nick also plays both corner infield positions and is talented on the mound. He has a great combination of being a competitor and knows how to keep his teammates loose during the games. When not playing baseball, Nick likes to camp and go to River Cats games. He also enjoys the traveling aspect of playing tournament ball with H-90. An honor roll student, Nick hopes to study and play baseball at a West Coast school such as U.C. Irvine, San Diego State or Cal State Fullerton after he graduates from Oakmont. Congratulations to Nick for earning P.O.T.W. honors!

Nick, along with all our P.O.T.W.'s, will receive a $10 cage card courtesy of our partners at Arena Softball.

PASTIME 9u AND PHENOM 10u CAPTURE USSSA MEMORIAL DAY TOURNAMENT CROWNS!!!

The 2008 Memorial Day weekend saw two H-90 teams win USSSA titles and several of our other clubs coming very close to capturing crowns. In Elk Grove, our Pastime 9u went 3-1 in pool play to reach the Monday championship game. In the final, the team played almost flawlessly in no-hitting the Roseville Bandits, 10-1, to take home the title. In Manteca, our mighty Phenom 10u compiled a 6-0 record including a 7-2 victory over the Elk Grove Dirtbags in the semi-final contest and a 11-8 championship win over the tough Bombers Baseball Club. Our Heat 8u, playing its inaugural tournament, battled hard but lost two tight contests in finishing 1-2 in pool play to just miss the championship round of the CHPB tournament in Roseville. In Manteca, our Rally 11u went 1-3 in pool play (but easily could have been 3-1) to and came up short in qualifying for Monday's playoffs. The Slam 12u played very well to finish 4-0 in preliminary play and earned the top seed and a bye entering the playoff round. The Slam handled the well-coached Peninsula Stars 9-6 in the semifinal but dropped the championship game to the Elk Grove Bulldogs, a team they had beaten earlier in the tournament. Our Rival II 13u was perhaps the most compelling story of the weekend. After struggling in regular play, the team stormed back in the playoffs, beating the top-seeded Central Valley Pioneers 5-2 in the quarterfinals and the Sacramento Bandits 7-2 in the semifinal tilt. In the championship game, the fast improving club held an early lead, but ultimately fell to the Nor Cal Sting 4-2 to realize a second place finish. In Manteca, the Command 14u played extremely well on Saturday and Sunday to finish 4-0 and capture the #1 seed going into Monday's playoffs, but chose a bad time to have a poor game, and dropped their semifinal battle to Volcanoes Baseball. At the Ultimate Memorial Day Tournament in Stockton, our new Hard 90 Team USA played very well in compiling a 3-0 in pool play and easily qualified for the championship round. Unfortunately, they experienced a bit of an early letdown in Monday's first playoff game and were eliminated by a score of 9-7. At the BPA Memorial Day Tournament, in Woodland, the Clinch 16u won the consolation bracket in finishing 2-2 in the event. All in all it was a very successful weekend for our teams and each of our athletes benefited from the great competition! We are looking forward to an incredible summer and fall with ALL our teams.

Our Rival 13u team traveled to Twin Creeks for the April 19-20 USSSA tournament and came away with the 13u "Elite" Division title. The club definitely brought their hitting shoes to the event, pounding out a combined 40 runs in victories over Kali Elite, EJ Sports Titans and the Monterey Bay Pirates. Although they dropped their final game in the four game round robin format to finish tied with the Pirates at 3-1, the Rival earned the championship by virtue of their 17-5 victory over the talented Monterey club. The Rival played exceptional defense and also received strong pitching from their deep staff. Congratulations to our Rival 13u for their great weekend of ball!

REDS MANAGER DUSTY BAKER VISITS H-90!

19-year Major League Baseball star and current Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker took time out and spoke with our young players between workouts on February 10. More than 150 Hard 90 players and family members alike listened attentively as Dusty spoke about the great game of baseball and how lessons on the field equate to lessons in life. He described his early years in the Major League and how he was mentored by Hank Aaron who taught him the importance of an athlete maintaining a good diet and getting proper rest. Dusty mentioned how a successful athlete maintains their cool on the field and does not showboat, instead letting their play do the talking. He concluded by reminding us that we all need to work hard at pursuing our dreams, whether they involve a baseball career or any other pursuit in life. Dusty graciously signed autographs for many of those in attendance following his speech. Our deepest thanks go out to Dusty!

Player / Parent Support Guideline

The coaching staff at Hard 90 Baseball Academy would like to thank the players and parents for their dedication to our program. Travel baseball is a unique experience that is far different from little leagues or rec leagues. The goal of our coaching staff is to prepare our players for high school baseball and beyond. Our coaching staff has over 200 years of playing and coaching experience at high school, junior college, division one and professional baseball levels.

To help us in the development process of our program, we need the total dedication and support of our players and parents. Hard 90 provides quality instruction, guest speakers, workouts and tournaments throughout the year that gives our players numerous opportunities to get better year around. The tournaments provide valuable game experience to our players before they reach the high school level.

Here are some guidelines that will help in the development of our players and program:

Please be on time. Coaches prepare pregame practice plans as well as workout plans that will be disrupted if players are late.

Please call and let us know if you can't attend a practice or game. Our coaches expect all our players to be at each workout or practice. Missing games or workouts will delay the developement process of that individual. The schedule months ahead of time and very rarely do we change the schedule. Being absent will tell us or your high school team the dedication you have to your program.

Encourage your son to work on baseball at home. To get better, players have to work on something everyday.

Don't pressure your son in games. The experience is about the journey not the destination.

Cheer for the team!

Don't coach from the stands! We are constantly coaching our players throughout practices and games. You will interfere with his development and most likely embarrass your son.

Set up an appointment with the director if you need input on the developement of your son. This is a good way to communicate and shows respect to the program and your son.

Have Fun... Have Fun... Have Fun!!!!!!

Be totally committed and dedicated to Hard 90 Baseball!!!

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination."

- Tommy Lasorda, Los Angeles Dodgers

H-90's Rival 13u traveled to Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale over the March 8-9 weekend to participate in the USSSA March Madness Tournament (Elite League teams only). The team came out on fire Saturday, beating the tough Bay Area Blazers by a score of 10-1. The Rival then won their next two pool play games by scores of 13-5 and 4-0, respectively, to earn the #1 seed going into Sunday's championship round. The semifinal contest saw the club fall behind early to Kali Elite (San Jose) before roaring back to gain an 11-8 victory. In the final against the Headfirst Gamers, the Rival held a 6-2 advantage entering the fifth inning but had to settle for the runner-up trophy when they could not hold the lead. Our Rival played fine baseball over the weekend, collectively swinging the bats very well and getting a number of strong individual pitching performances.

On Saturday, February 9th, Hard 90 instructors Rick Sundberg and Alex Creel traveled to Lincoln Little League and put on a very good coaching clinic. The Lincoln Little League managers and coaches were treated to an interactive experience focusing on pitching, hitting and other fundamentals. The coaches actually took part in the same training drills that they can use this season to sharpen their young players' baseball skills. A big thank you to Alex Montes of the Slam 12u who demonstrated first hand our proper hitting and pitching mechanics. Hard 90 is proud to partner with Lincoln Little League and be a baseball resource in the community!

HARD 90 TEAMS IMPRESSIVE AT USSSA PRESIDENTS' DAY SUPER N.I.T.

Hard 90 sent six teams into action over the Presidents' Day holiday weekend to compete in the 2008 USSSA Super N.I.T. where they faced the best competition in Northern California. Most of our clubs placed high in the tournament but each fell short of capturing a title and qualifying for the Elite 24 national championships. The Rival 13u went 3-1 in pool play to grab the number two seed heading into Monday's championship round and then easily won their first playoff game against Colorado 5280. However, in the semifinal contest, the vastly improved Club All Star sent the Rival home with a third place finish in the thirteen team field. The Rival II went 0-3 in pool play but came out strong in Monday's consolation game and defeated the Clayton Valley Juniors by a score of 12-2. The Slam 12u went 2-0-1 with nice wins over the Headfirst Gamers and the California Sting to earn the top playoff seed and a first round bye. In the semifinal match up, the team lost a 2-0 heartbreaker to the SV Yankees (the eventual tournament champion) to also finish in third place. Facing all talented clubs, the Rally 11u went 1-3 in pool play and did not qualify for the finals. The Phenom 10u went 2-1 in pool play but the club's normally potent bats went silent in their semifinal loss and they came away with a third place finish. The Pastime 9u played extremely well all weekend and went 3-0 in pool play. In the championship round they continued their inspired play in the semifinals, beating the Roseville Bandits 12-4 before losing the title game to Dye Hard Baseball. All of our players experienced a great weekend of baseball and improved their skills by competing in Manteca and Redding against the best Northern California has to offer.

PHENOM 10u TAKE THE GOLD IN MANTECA - THREE H-90 TEAMS QUALIFY FOR THE TRIPLE CROWN WORLD SERIES!!!

The Phenom 10u returned to form and went 4-0 to win the Triple Crown Super Bowl Bash at Manteca Big League Dreams Park held February 2-3. The Phenom combined great pitching and exceptional defense to go along with their usual potent offensive attack to easily capture the crown. The Pastime 9u lost their first two games on Saturday, but rebounded on Sunday to beat the Tri-Cities Terrors and then overcame a two run deficit in the last inning to stun the Roseville Bandits by a score of 8-7 enroute to their second place finish. The fast improving Rally 11u made it to the championship game with a 2-1 pool play record, but fell to the VYAA Bombers in a slugfest final. The Slam 12u lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Central Valley Heat in Sunday's well-played semifinal. The Rival 13u went 2-1 in pool play, including a nice victory over the highly-regarded California Sting Outlaws, but fell just short of making the championship game. The Rival II, playing against tough competition, went 0-3 but played well on Sunday in a 7-4 loss to the Tri-Valley Legends. The Command 14u did not play up to its potential and dropped three close games including a late Saturday night contest that was played with a wind chill factor of 25 degrees. Finally, the Clinch 15u/16u went 1-0-1 on Saturday in the BPA Super Bowl Party Tournament in Ripon, only to have Sunday's championship play washed out by Mother Nature. Congratulations to all of our teams that competed well over the wild weather weekend and especially to the Pastime, Phenom and Rally as they qualified for the Triple Crown World Series held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado late this July.

MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER MANNY PARRA VISITS HARD 90

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Manny Parra recently dropped into the Arena and visited Hard 90 to talk to our players about baseball and life. Before being called up to the big leagues last year, he made national headlines by pitching a PERFECT GAME for the Brewers' Triple A affiliate. Manny stressed how enjoying the game is vital to a player's development. He spoke about how, as a youth, he was never one of the best players in his home town of Carmichael but always had a great love for baseball. As he matured, this passion resulted in his developing a strong work ethic that carried him to success at American River College and then in professional baseball. He has already shown he is an effective major league pitcher in his outings with the Brewers in '07. Our thanks to Manny for spending time with H-90 and we will be rooting for him during the upcoming season (spring training just around the corner)!

COMMAND 14u's FINISH A STRONG 3rd IN WINTER NATIONALS IN ARIZONA

Beautiful 70 degree sunshine, manicured pro fields, ten competitive tournament games and a great resort to stay at was the route the Hard 90 Command 14u's chose for a week down in Arizona. Congratulations to our fine team who had a very strong showing in the Super Series Winter Nationals, recently held at the Mariners/Padres Spring Training site in Peoria, Arizona. The Command went 2-1 in pool play and were a #9 seed before beginning an incredible double-elimination round that they will never forget. They lost the first game of that round to a very tough Arizona Quake team (ended up in the championship game) but showed tremendous pride and poise to knock off and eliminate their next FIVE opponents! In one day of their elimination spree, the Command scored 38 runs in winning all three games, starting at the complex at 10:30 in the morning and ending up at 9:00 at night! They finally ran out of steam (and pitching) though in the semi-final game again versus the Quake. Coach Alex Creel said it best, "our team battled and battled all week long, but the best part was how much fun we had too." Congratulations to all the players listed below who represented Hard 90 very well:

ERIC ADAMS (Rescue), JUNIOR CASAS (Roseville), ZEKE COLBY (Chico), MATT DAVIDSON (Sacramento), CHASE DICKSON (Granite Bay), KYLE DIXON (Roseville), BRENDEN KEENEY (Granite Bay), NICK LEBEAU (Granite Bay), SHAWN MUNKDALE (Granite Bay), JACK SHELLEDY (Davis), JONATHAN WONG (Grizzly Flats), RYAN XEPOLEAS (Loomis)

Hard 90 Coaches Alex Creel and Rick Sundberg

Recently, Rival 13u coach Mikela Olsen traveled to Granite Bay High School as a guest speaker for their sports culture class. Coach Olsen spoke about his years as a student athlete and what he has learned about life from being a professional baseball player. Mikela discussed the importance of good grades and always trying to better oneself, whether academically or as an athlete, and that a big key to success in any endeavor is being on time and prepared for the task at hand. He told his audience to never be afraid of a challenge and how strong competitors always need to find a way to meet their responsibilities and reach their goals. Coach Olsen's presentation was by all accounts a huge success.

PASTIME 9u's DR. JEKYLL/MR. HYDE IN MANTECA

You all know how unpredictable tournament ball is in general. When you throw a young team like our Pastime 9u team into the mix, who competed down in Manteca at the Big League Dreams Park for their first time on December 15-16, you get even more unpredictability. The club played very well on Saturday, beating the local Roseville Bandits 7-4 and then outslugging the Tri-Valley Terrors by a score of 10-5 to earn themselves a playoff bye and a #2 seed going into Sunday's playoff round. As it sometimes happens with the S.F. Giants or any other team, they played poorly the next day and the Terrors got revenge with a 14-5 win. Manager Dave Rodriguez gave credit to the Terrors and said that our young team needed to play with more intensity as a group. We know they'll make the adjustments and it won't be long before the Pastime 9u's will be getting deeper into many tournament Sundays!

On Saturday, December 1st, about 300 Hard 90 faithful including players and family members helped celebrate our second birthday at Arena Softball. Attendees were treated to a pasta dinner, great door prizes and open use of the Arena fields and batting cages! Our guest speaker was Leon Lee (father of the Chicago Cubs' Derrek Lee), who had an illustrious playing 17-year career playing in professional baseball and Japan. He gave the crowd his insights on baseball, the importance of doing well in school and his patience in parenting one of the best 1st basemen in the game. Many thanks to our friends at Arena Softball for hosting what was truly a great and fun-filled evening. Most of all we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the more than 200 families that currently participate in Hard 90, whose support has helped us become one of Northern California's most successful baseball academies in just two years!

They say the apple does not fall too far from the tree. Hard 90 can attest to that as a number of our players have fathers still actively playing baseball. Phil Adams, father of the Command's Eric Adams, Troy Nogosek, father of the Rival's Stephen Nogosek, and Mike Baker, father of the Clinch's Michael Baker all have been playing in the Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL) of Sacramento since 1993!. Phil Adams is a power hitting centerfielder for the Sacramento River Cats, who recently traveled to Florida and helped his club win the 35 and older MSBL National Fall Classic. Mike Baker and Troy Nogosek both play for the Auburn Braves where the former is a first baseman/ second baseman and the latter a rifle-armed shortstop. A few weeks ago, Phil, Mike and Troy competed together in the MSBL World Series in Arizona, where their team had a good showing. According to Phil Adams, "I feel lucky to have my son play in a organized academy such as this, we played in the streets growing up." These three all run Hard 90's, it just seems a little farther now than before!

SHOW 15u WIN BPA FALL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

H-90 had eight teams compete in tournaments over the November 10-11 weekend. At the BPA Fall Championship, the Show 15u overcame a poor start on Saturday to win the title. The seventh-seeded Show roared back on Sunday winning three straight playoff games, culminating in a 4-3 championship win over Bret's Muckdogs. The Command 14u went 1-1 in Saturday's pool play, after defeating the San Leandro Outlaws 8-3. Sunday started off well for the club after a 3-2 win over CenCal, but ended with a loss to the Turlock Rangers. The Pastime 9u, playing up against 10u competition, exceeded expectations in the BPA event, playing tough and going 2-2, including a playoff win, in the tournament. The Rival II, playing in only their second tournament, battled hard all weekend and just missed winning a couple of close games. In Manteca, the mighty Phenom 10u earned the #1 seed going into Sunday's tournament round, and subsequently reached their 11th consecutive game, but lost in the finals to a tough Nevada Outlaws squad. The Slam 12u, hoping to follow up their October 27-28 Reno tournament win, likewise finished Saturday as the top seed in their bracket. On Sunday, they beat Lamorinda Baseball to reach the final before losing 8-4 to the Elk Grove Thunder in the championship game. Finally, our Rival 13u went 1-1 on Saturday in pool play but got a tough first round playoff draw and dropped a tight game to the Bay Area Blazers by a score of 5-4. Nice job by our teams, they all played well and got a lot out of the weekend!

NICK SWISHER AND TY VAN BURKLEO A HIT AT HARD 90!

A big thank you goes out to Nick Swisher and Ty Van Burkleo of the Oakland A's for visiting and speaking to the masses at Hard 90 Baseball Academy! Swisher, star outfielder and first baseman for the A's, spoke of his aggressive approach to hitting and gave us some fundamentals that all good hitters share in common. He also let us in on his journey to the Oakland A's, from his formative years including starring at his high school in West Virginia. Nick talked about what a great senior year he had and how he thought for sure he would be drafted professionally, only to find out his dream had to wait a little. Nick said that gave him incentive to work even harder!!! His baseball success continued big time at Ohio State where he would be selected in the first round by the A's. Nick also gave insight into his workout regime including rice buckets, roll-up bars, hand squeezes and more.

A's hitting instructor Ty Van Burkleo was also great. Although it was his 45th birthday, he took time out to tell our players and families the importance of a lot of swings, good vision, balance and a strong work ethic. He also spoke of how difficult it was for Nick to get noticed in West Virginia but how Northern California is scouted out much more thoroughly. After their talk, Ty and Nick they took time out to answer many questions and sign a bunch of autographs to make it a very special day for all of the Hard 90 players and family members in attendance.

Hard 90 teams had their best collective showing ever this past weekend, winning four titles and capturing a second place finish. In Rocklin, our Clinch 15-16u squad won our inaugural Fall Classic Tournament in convincing fashion. In the BPA Halloween Classic in Turlock, the Rival 13u won their second straight tournament title by going 5-0 after beating CenCal 6-1 in the championship game. Also in Turlock, the mighty Phenom 10u used explosive bats in reaching their ninth straight championship game, then throttled the Stanislaus Sting by a score of 17-9 to win the title. In Reno, the ever-improving Slam 12u captured the crown in the "Rage in the Sage Open" in dramatic fashion, overcoming a large deficit in the semifinal to defeat the Nevada Outlaws 10-8 and beating the Sacramento Sleepers 4-2 in the championship game. In Woodland, the Rally 11u went 3-0 in pool play to reach the finals of the USSSA Halloween Havoc tournament but fell to the Davis Dynasty 10-5 in the championship. The Command 14u reached the playoff round in the BPA Halloween Classic In Ripon after going 1-1 in pool play. The team won their first playoff game, defeating the Yuba Sutter Heat 8-2 before falling to the U.C. Legends in the tough semifinal. In their tournament debut, the Rival II 13u played three close games at the USSSA Halloween Havoc and won one of them, defeating the Solano Bombers by a score of 11-3. Congratulations to all our hard working teams on this record Hard 90 weekend!

Ron Sylvia, manager of our Clinch 16u, has been named head coach of Del Oro High School's junior varsity baseball team. A ninth round draft pick of the California Angels in 1980, Ron is also one of our top pitching instructors at Hard 90. Ron becomes the latest Hard 90 coach to take the helm of a local high school team, joining: Bret Hemphill of the Show 15u, junior varsity coach at Whitney High School; Dave Rodriguez of the Pastime 9u, freshman coach at Yuba City High School; and Alex Creel of the Rival II, junior varsity coach at El Camino High School. While Ron will have new responsibilities, he will continue to offer private pitching lessons and remain an important part of the Hard 90 coaching staff.
RIVAL 13u ROLLS IN MANTECA; OTHER H-90 TEAMS GET CLOSE!

The Rival 13u continued their fine play in winning the ten-team Hardtke World of Baseball Super Series Qualifier Tournament over September 22-23 in Manteca. The Rival went 2-0 in pool play, including a thrilling come from behind 6-5 victory over Club All Star. On Sunday, the team won all three of their playoff games, defeating the tenacious Hollister Young Guns 6-2 in the final to capture the crown. The Rival used strong pitching and timely hitting to win their first title of the 2008 season for manager Mikela Olsen in his Rival debut. The Command 14u were 2-0 in pool play on Saturday including a 15-0 win against the Roseville Sun Devils. In Sunday's semi-final game, the team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker when their tying runner was thrown out at the plate on a spectacular play by the San Leandro Outlaws' centerfielder in the last inning! The Slam 12u went 1-1 on Saturday to reach the playoffs, but their inconsistent play contributed to a first round playoff loss to the California Sting. The Rally 11u, plagued by unusual pitching problems, went 0-2 in pool play but righted the ship on Sunday, winning their last game against the San Jose Bruins. After going 3-0 in the opening round on Saturday, the top-seeded Phenom 10u fell just short of another title, dropping the championship game to the Nevada Outlaws, a club they had defeated earlier in the tournament. The Clinch 16u were unfortunately rained out in San Jose. All our teams are now getting fired up for the USSSA Fall State Championships at Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale on October 13-14.

HARD 90 COMPETES WELL AT USA CHAMPIONS PROGRAM TOURNEY

Due to the international birth date requirement, a combined group of 13u and 14u H-90 players had a very special experience over Labor Day weekend, competing in the USA Baseball Champions Program Tournament. Our boys got to play two of their three games at the state-of-the-art Schott Stadium, the home field of Santa Clara University baseball. A very youthful club by USA Champion's standards, Hard 90 was in contention during most of its two pool play games before falling behind late and losing both contests. In the championship round, the club carried a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning against the tough NorCal Athletics but was not able to hold on. Most importantly, the team represented Hard 90 very well and established a strong relationship with the USA Baseball Program, which will allow us to continue showcasing our players for USA National Team consideration!

Hard 90 had seven of our teams playing in tournaments over the Labor Day weekend. In Sacramento, the Show 15u made it to the championship game before falling to the Placer Pirates, while the shorthanded Command 14u competed hard but failed to qualify for the playoffs on Monday. In Manteca, the game Rival 13u went 1-0-1 in pool play but lost their first game in Monday's championship round. The Slam 12u provided the weekend's biggest win in their opening game, defeating the eventual tournament winner and nationally-ranked Backyard Boyz by a score of 5-3. The Rally 11u, with a 2-1 record going into their final game of pool play and needing a victory to advance to Monday's final, couldn't get by tournament champion Lamorinda Baseball, losing 7-2. Finally, at Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale, the Phenom 10u fell just short in its bid for a fourth straight tournament championship, losing to the strong PYB Crushers in Monday's championship game. We are now gearing for a big tournament weekend on Sept. 22-23!!!

Hard 90 gives a big thumbs up in the recent superb performances of our Phenom 10u. The team has won its last two tournaments, going 8-0 in the process! The team is managed by Mike Watari and Todd Malone. The scary thing is that they continue to improve, benefiting from consistent hitting and clutch pitching. Coach Watari notes the team always seems to rise to the level of its competition and likens the club to, "a fine wine that gets better with age!" The team is looking forward to Labor Day Weekend, when they go for their third title in a row at the USSSA Labor Day Classic at Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale.

H-90 RIVAL FINISH 2nd OUT OF 96 TEAMS IN COOPERSTOWN!!!

You've always heard that baseball is a game of inches, now one of our teams really knows it is true. The Hard 90 Rival team missed winning the championship game in Cooperstown Dreams Park by literally an inch in the final frame of the championship game. To say our team represented Hard 90 well back East would be an vast understatement. Manager Rick Sundberg took 14 dedicated players in our program to this well-planned trip of a lifetime. Here's how our team put the Hard 90 Baseball Academy on the national map.

The Rival went a perfect 7-0 in pool play, playing seven different teams from seven different states. For their efforts, the Rival were ranked #4 (out of 96 teams) going into the playoffs on Wednesday night. They put away the #32 team, the Carroll Cannons of Maryland, by a score of 14-2. On Thursday morning, they faced #48 ranked Chicago North Shore Sharks which they beat in pool play. They jumped on them early and won the game 12-4. The quarter-final game was a tight affair with the #12 ranked CCC Rockers from California. Great pitching and three early runs were enough in a well-played 3-2 victory. The semi-finals led the Rival against the #1 seeded and much heralded American Avengers out of Texas. The Rival demonstrated great pitching, great defense and drilled balls all over the field to decisively defeat them by a score of 9-4 vaulting them into the prestigious final game in Cooperstown!

The Championship game was watched by many across the nation with a live play-by-play broadcast on the webcams. After a spectacular opening ceremony, this exciting game against the #15 Nor Cal Grizzlies had more twists and turns than Lombard Street. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead but H-90 quickly responded back with 2 runs in the bottom of the first. The H-90 gang managed to build up an 8-4 lead going into the last inning, but the bats of the Grizzlies really came alive to tie it up. Going into the last half of the inning, the H-90 Rival still sensed that this was their game. Our leadoff hitter got up with two outs and laced what seemed to be a walk-off homerun to right field, only to hit the top of the fence by ONE INCH!!!! The game was a nail biter all the way, and the lower seeded Grizzlies managed to pull it out by a score of 11-8 in extra innings!!! The Hard 90 Rival really played all week to get that far and come that close, they were all champions. Congratulations to all the members of the Rival listed below and their tremendous family support for a week they'll never forget:

Stephen Nogosek, J.R. Robinson, Guillermo Salazar, Keith Judd, Dan Johnson, Matt Olson, George Corp, Tanner Hetzel, Joe Ellis, Byron Farrell, Trevin Haseltine, Travis Bounds, Ethan Liddle, Jimmy Shaw and coaches Rick Sundberg, Paul Benzer, Lance Judd and Kevin Robinson.

We have four out there right now playing in professional baseball pursuing their dreams of making it to the big leagues. Since they have started, H-90 has been questioned many times on "how are they doing?" Well, they are all doing very well and you can see for yourself with the web address to each instructor with their teams below. After coming close in their first two tournaments, the Pastime 8u broke through to capture their initial title, winning the AABC 8u June Regional in Sacramento on June 23-24. The team capped off an undefeated weekend by pounding out 15 hits to defeat a tough Natomas squad by a score of 16-6. In the opening game of pool play on Saturday, the Pastime battled the same Natomas team to a 4-4 tie. The Pastime bounced back by beating Citrus Heights 11-0 and Orangevale 12-2, to set up the rematch with Natomas in the championship game. The Pastime hit the ball extremely well throughout the weekend and played consistent defense, including several web gems in crucial situations. Congratulations to the Pastime 8u and manager Dave Rodriguez on their grabbing the gold! In the words of a classic song,"... the future's so bright, (we) gotta wear shades!"

On Monday evening, a combined squad from the Show 14u and Command 13u traveled to beautiful Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats, to take on a combined 13/14 Fair Oaks Wildcats team. Hard 90 pounded out 16 hits en route to a 13-2 victory. Eight different Hard 90 pitchers limited the Wildcats to just two hits in the nine inning contest. The boys played extremely well and had a great time in what should be an annual event! Thanks go out to the Wildcats and our host the River Cats for making this event a reality.

This Memorial Day weekend allowed seven of our Hard 90 teams to play in tournaments. All our teams were right in the thick of it but needed just a little luck from the baseball gods. In their first appearance ever in a tournament, the Pastime 8u pounded the ball and pitched well. The team finished 3-1, losing only to a powerhouse Tara Hills squad, the eventual tournament champion (16 teams). Great job, Pastime 8u's and congratulations to their coaches Dave Rodriguez and Chris Stiltner for doing such a great job! The Phenom 9u finished 3-1 in pool play to earn the #1 seed going into the championship game against the Nor Cal Wolfpack. In the final, the Phenom battled very hard before falling just short, losing to the Wolfpack 11-10 in an amazing finish. Down 11-5 in the final frame with two outs, our big-hearted Phenom tallied five runs before coming up just short with the winning runs in scoring position. The Rally 10u made it to the championship as the #2 seed after going 2-1 in pool play, including a 17-16 slugfest win (another incredible come-from-behind rally) against the Folsom Thunder and an 11-4 victory versus the Golden Era Dirtbags. The Rally lost to the tough Clovis Fire in the final, 8-5. The Slam 11u went 3-1 in pool play and entered championship day as the #2 seed. In the semi-final game, the Slam was defeated by the NorCal Phantoms, a team they had beaten 5-3 in the tournament opener. The Rival 12u started out with a bang on Saturday, defeating the Golden Era Pride 16-2 before going on to defeat the highly regarded and eventual tourney winner, California Sting Outlaws 4-3, in an extremely well-played contest. Unfortunately, on Sunday, the Rival made a few defensive mistakes and failed to qualify for the Monday championship game. The Command 13u won their first pool play game in dramatic fashion, scoring seven runs in the last inning to pull out an 8-7 victory (ANOTHER INCREDIBLE H-90 COMEBACK!). In the trophy round, the Command beat Prove It (Stockton) 4-3 before losing to the top seeded and eventual tournament champion, Fresno Blue Devils, 10-3. The team then went on to play two more games in the consolation round, beating the Elk Grove Bulls 11-3 before Prove It avenged its earlier defeat by a count of 7-6 in a great game. On Saturday, the Show 14u lost to Club All Star 9-3 before rebounding against the Fallon Mustangs 19-0. In a critical contest on Sunday, the Show dropped a 6-3 heart breaker to the Placer Pirates, keeping them out of championship play. On Monday, the team bounced back to win the championship of the consolation bracket, beating both the Elk Grove Tarheels and Folsom Flames, 10-0. The spirit of Hard 90 was in full force over the weekend, with incredible games and amazing comebacks everywhere!!!

The Command 13U beat the tough Yuba City Flood twice on Sunday to take the May 12-13 Super Series Qualifier Tournament in Elk Grove. Determined to not let a big game slip away, the Command used a huge team effort to hold off the Flood 8-6 in the championship game. This was the Command's first-ever tournament title and a nice Mother's Day present for the moms who spent the Sunday afternoon rooting their boys to victory. The 14u Show, after a pair of convincing wins on Saturday in Sacramento including a 5-1 victory over the CV Wildcats, went into Sunday's championship round as the #1 seed. Unfortunately, the Wildcats got revenge in the semifinal game, winning 11-1 and ended up winning the tourney.
H-90 TO PLAY AT RALEY FIELD ON MAY 14!!!

On Monday, May 14th, Hard 90 will bring a mixed team of our tournament level 13 and 14 year-old players to Raley Field to face the Fair Oaks Wildcats in a nine-inning contest. This will be a special opportunity for these young men and hopefully create a great tradition for years to come. Admission is free but there is a parking fee for the event. The game time is 6:05pm (gates open at 4;30pm) and all H-90 fans are encouraged to attend! Such an event carries a price tag as we must pay for the privilege of using the field. Hard 90 Baseball is looking for players of all ages from the Greater Sacramento Area and beyond to join our competitive tournament teams, ages 8u-17u. Right now, we are especially interested in recruiting highly skilled, younger 14u (born on or after January 1, 1994) and 13u players to play for our new USA Baseball Champions Program team, members of which will be eligible for selection to the 2007 and 2008 USA 14u National Team (go to www.usabaseball.com for more info). If you are interested in joining our Champions Program Team, please contact Rick Sundberg immediately at (916) 622-7154 as we have to get our roster in very soon (the first tournament for this club will at Santa Clara University over Labor Day weekend)!
